One of the amazing things I’ve always come to visit at Assateague are the wild ponies. There are not too many places on the East Coast that you will see Wild Ponies running around the beach.
Something new that I did this year which was an amazing experience was got my ORV (Off Road Vehicle) permit. More information on how to get your permit is here. In short, there is approximately 12 miles of beach to drive on and it was just an amazing experience. I got to see wildlife that you don’t see in Ocean City or anywhere on the East Coast. Being on the island driving through the sand was a completely different experience then what I had done in the past. If you have a 4×4 vehicle I highly recommend going for a ride. You don’t need a monster truck, just a 4×4.
So after cruising around for a while I went for a little walk inland. There were beautiful grasses and the sand looked as if it had not been touched in years. I ran across a spine (Literally) and at first thought it was a dolphin. It turns out that the spine was actually to a seal. What’s amazing is when you walk into a place like this where there is little disruption from humans, it truly takes you back to a different time and a different order. Makes you wonder what things looked like a 1o00’s of years ago.
Here is a picture of the spine. I actually found several vertebrae in other places adventuring around the beach. I still believe this is a seal spine although it may have been a dolphin, shark who knows.
So after a great day of exploring the beach, I caught the sunset on the bay. It was absolutely amazing.
After seeing this, I made a point to catch the sunrise in the morning over the Atlantic.
It was an amazing weekend. When you see all of the natural beauty out there and reminds you of how small you are in this world. It makes me want to explore more and see everything there is to see out there. The amazing thing is you don’t really have to travel far or spend a lot of money to catch an amazing site, do an awesome hike and experience what this world has to offer.
